The actual version of Traffic is 4.39 . It has besides a few bugfixes some new functions too - see the What's new - new function, changes, bugfixes in the latest versions of Traffic page.
There are 2 different install programs for Traffic:
The full installation package is able to access the internet too, in order to download updates and extensions - the newest program version, new or extended picture libraries and the newest timetable files (scene definitions).
The install programs change substantially once in 3-4 years, when the picture collection is repacked - the unchanged part of the old vehicles and the new and updated ones too will be placed in new .tvl files. The .tvl files of the 'base set' all named as YYXX.tvl, where YY is the last 2 digits of the year the repacking took place, and XX denotes the content, for example:
gs
for german steam engines,f
for french railway vehiclese
for other european vehiclesAfter a repacking one needs to replace almost all files of Traffic, so a full install is needed. Between two repackings it is enough to start one of the same installation programs, which was created after the repacking, and both of them can download during the update the picture libraries of the new and updated verhicle picture - as the extended timetable files and program binaries too.
One can install Traffic by starting the install programs normally, but with limited capabilities:
for example, you are not able to install Traffic for all users.
To be able to have all possibilities you should start the installer as an administrator:
right click on the downloaded install program
(if you are in the drop-down list of your browser of the downloaded files,
then first open the containig folder from that list),
and choose Run as administrator
from the context menu.
Windows10 is gradually becoming stricter against programs not signed with a certificate. It is a hobby project for a small audience, the author is neither willing nor able to pay for a certificate (there is no free alternatives here -in contrary to the certificates for websites). So, please be prepared for Windows 10 warnings and look for "I accept the risk, run it anyway" style choices.
If you want to get only the program binaries ( traffic.scr and TrafScrB.dll ) in order to have the newest functions and bugfixes, but you are not interested in the extended stock list (picture collection) and timetable files, than you can download only the zip file with the program binaries, and manually change the traffic.scr and TrafScrB.dll files - whereever they are located (In the installation directory or in the bin subdirectory of the installation directory, in the Windows or Windows/System32 directory).
There are a few other files in this .zip too - help files, the starter traffic.exe and an example menu file of the graphic testpad / macro editor traffic.gmm . They change almost never, but the sum of their sizes is so small, it is not worth to create an additional downloadable .zip file only with the 2 Traffic binaries.
There is also an experimental "Side by side" binary file set for Traffic. It contains everything the traffic_full.zip package contains, and additionally the non-standard components ( .ocx files ) Traffic uses. Non-standard means all the .ocx files, which are not already included by Microsoft in Windows 10. (It contains some components from Microsoft, some components from other authors, and the Traffic Timetable Editor component). If you download the Side-by-side binaries, please start it the very first time
Either somebody has downloaded the install program and installed Traffic, or downloaded the Side-by-side binaries, can use the following stock list files.

When Traffic was first published, the size of the .tvl picture libraries was held below 1.2 Mb, in order to fit on floppy disks. The moderate picture set (a few thousand pictures) and the lack of photografic backgrounds helped to keep the size for the program and it's data small - adapting to the characteristics of the machines and the internet connections of that time. Nowadays Traffic has already half a million vehicle pictures, and several hundred photo backgrounds, the total size grew accordingly. Today's machines, harddisks and internet connections have no problem with it. As mentioned above, the whole set has about the size of a normal movie in standard quality. This is 'only' a screensaver - even if for railway / tram / bus enthusiasts it is a lovely one -, so it shouldn't be the program that makes you buy a bigger machine. As Windows itself and the most programs an average person is using today was growing more extensively, I am sure it is not the case.
