3 | RHEI | Vale of Rheidol Railway | The Vale of Rheidol Railway is a 12 mile long 1ft 11.5in gauge line in Mid-Wales, running from Aberystwyth on the coast to Devil's Bridge. It was conceived as both a mineral carrier and to catch the local day-trip trade, although for nearly all its life it has existed only as a tourist railway. It opened in 1902 as an independent company but with strong interest from the Cambrian Railways, it became part of the Great Western Railway in 1923, and then British Railways. It holds the distinctions of being the last part of BR to use steam, and was the first part to be privatised. | GB | TRAFFIC |
