1 FFEST Ffestiniog Railway The Ffestiniog Railway is a 2ft (nom.) gauge railway in North Wales. It is probably the most famous and influential narrow gauge railway in the world! The railway was built to carry slate from the quarries in Blaenau Ffestiniog to the quays in Porthmadog. Without the railway it is doubtful that either of these places would have developed anywhere near to the extent they have today. At first a mixture of horse and gravity power was used, but horses were later replaced by steam power. The railway operated continuously from 1836 until it closed in 1946. It now operates as a preserved tourist line, reopening in stages from 1954 until 1982. GB TRAFFIC
