3 | LMVLR | Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway | The L&MVLR was a 2' 6\" gauge line in Derbyshire, England. It ran through picturesque but rural country, with a very sparse population to sustain it, from Waterhouses (at the end of the North Staffordshire Railway's branch from Leek) to Hulme End, a distance of just over 8 miles. The line opened in 1904 and was operated by the NSR, until both were absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923. The LMS continued to operate it at an ever increasing loss due to competition from road transport until finally, in 1934, the dairy that was its main source of traffic closed, and the railway itself soon succumbed. All was not lost, however, because the local council ensured that most of the track-bed was retained as a cycle-way and footpath, and thus can still be enjoyed today. | GB | TRAFFIC |
